On July 1st, the global scientific community celebrates International Polychaete Day, a day dedicated to the fascinating world of polychaetes and to honouring Dr. Kristian Fauchald, a renowned researcher in polychaete taxonomy.

As marine annelids play a central role in the MAPWORMS Project, we were excited to take part in this celebration. The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) organized a special event at the Cretaquarium on July 1st 2025, welcoming visitors to discover the diversity and importance of polychaetes.

Attendees had the opportunity to observe these remarkable organisms under stereoscopes, participate in interactive “worm games”, and express their creativity through themed artwork. The event also featured delicious polychaete-inspired cupcakes, adding a fun and engaging element to the experience.

Visitors also learned about the MAPWORMS project and how these extraordinary worms inspire innovations in robotics.
