The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) is a public marine research organization operating under the supervision of the General Secretarial for Research and Innovation (GSRI). It is formed by three different institutes, one of which is the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture (IMBBC).

IMBBC conducts research on aquaculture, genomics and molecular biotechnology, marine biodiversity and ecosystem management. IMBBC has also gained expertise in bioimaging of marine organisms and it is equipped with a micro-CT scanner (Skyscan 1172) which can visualise the interior and exterior characteristics of a sample in 3 dimensions.

IMBBC is currently participating in several European and national projects, networks and initiatives. IMBBC also operates the national LifeWatchGreece, which hosts online platforms serving as data repositories for the whole Mediterranean region (MedOBIS) and offers online e-Services, virtual labs (including the microCTvlab) and mobile applications freely available for use by researchers, environmental managers, students and the general public.
